EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the incredible Le Fer-A-Cheval & Le Fer-A-Cheval suspendu par les pieds, c1763. The image captures both the Greater horseshoe bat in its natural habitat, showing it on all fours as well as hanging upside-down. This mesmerizing scene is taken from "Histoire Naturelle, generale et particuliere, avec la description du Cabinet du Roi", a monumental work written by the Comte de Buffon between 1749 and 1804. The book itself was an extensive compilation of knowledge about the natural sciences during that era. It covered various subjects such as physics, chemistry, technology, and most notably, the comprehensive study of animals' natural history. Countless volumes were dedicated to this vast exploration of zoology. The intricate engraving featured in this print beautifully illustrates the detailed anatomy of these fascinating creatures. From their delicate wings to their slender bodies and legs perfectly adapted for hanging upside down - every aspect is meticulously captured. This historical piece not only serves as a reminder of our ever-evolving understanding of biology but also pays homage to Christian Friedrich Fritsch's contribution to scientific literature alongside George Louis Leclerc (Comte de Buffon). As we gaze upon this remarkable image from eighteenth-century France, we are transported back in time to witness nature's wonders through the eyes of these pioneering scholars.
