King Richard I (1157-1199) drawing his sword upon the Cardinal Legate of the Pope

King Richard I (1157-1199) drawing his sword upon the Cardinal Legate of the Pope. Richard was King of England from 1189 to 1199. He was known as Richard the Lionheart, or C?ur de Lion, even before his accession because of his military reputation. He spent little of his reign in England, setting out on the Third Crusade in 1190, and from 1194 onwards fighting to regain territories in France. He remains one of the very few Kings of England remembered by reputation, not number. Ffrom Cassells Illustrated History of England

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a defining moment in the life of King Richard I, also known as Richard the Lionheart. The image depicts the fearless monarch drawing his sword upon the Cardinal Legate of the Pope, symbolizing an intense clash between royalty and religious authority. King Richard I reigned over England from 1189 to 1199, leaving an indelible mark on history due to his military prowess. Even before ascending to the throne, he earned his nickname "Lionheart" or "Cœur de Lion" for his exceptional skills on the battlefield. However, it is not just his martial achievements that define him but also his relentless pursuit of power and territories. The print showcases Richard's complex character as a ruler torn between two worlds: England and France. Spending little time in his own country during his reign, he embarked on the Third Crusade in 1190 and later fought fervently to reclaim lost French territories from 1194 onwards. Richard remains one of those rare English kings who are remembered more by their reputation than their numerical order in history. This engraving serves as a testament to both his royal status and religious conflicts during this era. Preserved through time, this monochrome masterpiece allows us to delve into medieval politics while contemplating how religion intertwined with power struggles among sovereigns like King Richard I.
