King Henry III (1207-1272) in the Chapter House at Winchester preaching to the monks, 19th century. Artist: Saunders

King Henry III (1207-1272) in the Chapter House at Winchester preaching to the monks, 19th century. Henry is seen here trying to enforce the election of his brother to the bishopric. Henry ruled England for fifty-six years from 1216 to his death. Medieval English monarchs did not use numbers after their names, and his contemporaries knew him as Henry of Winchester. He was the first child king in England since the Norman Conquest. Despite his long reign, his personal accomplishments were slim and he was a political and military failure. England, however, prospered during his century and his greatest monument is Westminster, which he made the seat of his government, and where he expanded the abbey as a shrine to Edward the Confessor

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a significant moment in English history, depicting King Henry III (1207-1272) preaching to the monks in the Chapter House at Winchester. The artist, Saunders, skillfully portrays Henry's attempt to enforce his brother's election to the bishopric. Henry ruled England for an impressive fifty-six years from 1216 until his death. Known as Henry of Winchester during his lifetime, he was the first child king since the Norman Conquest. However, despite his long reign, Henry's personal accomplishments were rather limited and he faced political and military failures. Nonetheless, England thrived under his rule and one of his greatest legacies is Westminster Abbey. He transformed it into the seat of government and expanded it as a shrine dedicated to Edward the Confessor. In this image, we see King Henry III dressed in royal robes addressing a group of attentive monks inside Winchester's Chapter House. The monochrome setting adds depth and intensity to this historic scene. Saunders' engraving beautifully captures both religious devotion and regal authority intertwined within medieval England's political landscape. This print serves as a powerful reminder of King Henry III’s influence on religion, monarchy, and ultimately on shaping England’s destiny during that era.
