Kensington Palace at the time of Victoria, (1901). Creator: Unknown

Kensington Palace at the time of Victoria, (1901). View of Kensington Palace in London during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). Originally built in the 17th century as the residence of the Earl of Nottingham, Kensington Palace was acquired by King William III in 1689. The King desired a residence close to London but away from its smoky air which aggravated his asthma. At the time Kensington was a village outside the capital and fitted the bill perfectly. The palace was improved and extended by Sir Christopher Wren and a carriage road was built connecting it with Hyde Park Corner. From " The Illustrated London News Record of the Glorious Reign of Queen Victoria 1837-1901: The Life and Accession of King Edward VII. and the Life of Queen Alexandra". [London, 1901]

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the grandeur of Kensington Palace during the reign of Queen Victoria. Originally built as the residence of the Earl of Nottingham in the 17th century, this historic palace became a cherished royal abode when King William III acquired it in 1689. Situated just outside London, Kensington Palace provided a respite from the city's smoky air that aggravated King William's asthma. The village-like setting perfectly suited his desire for a regal dwelling close to London yet away from its bustling atmosphere. Over time, Sir Christopher Wren enhanced and expanded Kensington Palace, creating an architectural masterpiece that still stands today. A carriage road was constructed to connect it with Hyde Park Corner, further enhancing its accessibility and charm. The image captures not only the majestic exterior of Kensington Palace but also showcases its picturesque surroundings within Kensington Gardens. This enchanting landscape adds to its allure as a tourist attraction even during Queen Victoria's era. Preserved within "The Illustrated London News Record of the Glorious Reign of Queen Victoria" this photograph serves as a testament to both British history and Victorian architecture. Although created by an unknown artist, their skillful composition allows us to appreciate this iconic landmark through time. As we gaze upon this remarkable print, we are transported back to an era where elegance reigned supreme and royalty found solace amidst tranquil beauty.
