EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases General Juan Rius Rivera, a distinguished figure in the history of Cuba. Born in Puerto Rico in 1843, he ventured to Cuba in 1870 and soon became an integral part of the revolution that lasted until 1878. Returning to Cuba with an expedition in September 1896, General Rivera assumed leadership over the forces stationed at Pinar del Rio. However, his unwavering commitment to liberation came at a cost. In March 1897, he was wounded during battle and subsequently taken prisoner. Despite this setback, General Rivera's spirit remained unbroken as he continued his service to his country. Following his release from captivity, General Rivera took up a role at the Treasury department in 1905 before passing away in 1924. This monochrome portrait captures him during the vibrant era of the 1920s when he was still actively involved in shaping Cuba's destiny. With a commanding presence and distinctive moustache adorning his face, General Juan Rius Rivera epitomizes strength and determination. His image serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by individuals like him who fought tirelessly for their homeland's freedom.
