EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the regal presence of James I, King of Scotland, in the 15th century. The portrait showcases a man adorned in medieval attire, his bearded face exuding wisdom and authority. James I's reign was marked by a tumultuous beginning as he spent the first 18 years as an English hostage, held for ransom. However, his resilience prevailed as the Scots eventually paid the demanded sum, leading to his return to Scotland in 1424. The image transports us back to a time when monarchs ruled with absolute power and kingdoms were defined by their sovereigns. King James I's coronation at Scone symbolized not only his ascension but also Scotland's triumph over adversity. This engraving is taken from "Old England's Worthies" a book published in London around 1850 that aimed to preserve historical figures and events through visual representation. It serves as a testament to the enduring fascination with royal lineage and Scottish history. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece of artistry, we are reminded of King James I's indomitable spirit and unwavering commitment to his nation. His legacy lives on through this print—a timeless tribute to one of Scotland's most influential rulers whose reign shaped its destiny forever.
