Hours of Queen Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain: Fol. 147v, c. 1500. Creator

Hours of Queen Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain: Fol. 147v, c. 1500. This manuscript was illuminated by a circle of at least five highly organized manuscript painters active in the Flemish cities of Ghent and Bruges. The principal illuminator was Alexander Bening, who painted the majority of the books miniatures. Manuscripts produced by this circle of artists are renowned for the decoration of their borders, which typically feature a rich variety of realistically-painted flowers, birds, and butterflies. This prayer book, called a book of hours, was intended not for a cleric, but for the private devotions of a lay person-in this case, Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain (1451-1504). Isabellas coat of arms embellishes the books frontispiece. It is unlikely that the book was commissioned by the Queen herself; rather, she probably received it as a diplomatic gift from someone courting her patronage, perhaps Cardinal Francisco Jimenez de Cisneros. A Franciscan friar, Jimenez was dependent upon Isabella for his advancement, first to the post of Queens confessor in 1492, and then to Archbishop of Toledo in 1495

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print showcases a page from the "Hours of Queen Isabella the Catholic, Queen of Spain" manuscript, dating back to around 1500. Created by a talented group of Flemish manuscript painters, including the renowned Alexander Bening, this prayer book was designed for private devotions rather than clerical use. The exquisite borders of this manuscript are adorned with meticulously painted flowers, birds, and butterflies that bring life and vibrancy to each page. The frontispiece proudly displays Isabella's coat of arms, indicating her ownership or receipt as a diplomatic gift. While it is unlikely that Queen Isabella commissioned this book herself, it is believed she received it from someone seeking her patronage - possibly Cardinal Francisco Jimenez de Cisneros. As a Franciscan friar dependent on Isabella's support for his own advancement in the Church hierarchy during the late 15th century, he may have presented her with this precious work. This print captures not only the artistic mastery and attention to detail found within these pages but also provides us with a glimpse into the personal spirituality and devotion of one of history's most influential queens. It serves as a testament to both religious piety and diplomatic relationships during an era when art played an essential role in expressing power and prestige.
