H.M. 50-Gun Frigate "Nankin", to be launched this day, Saturday, 1850. This noble and beautiful specimen of naval architecture...is built from the designs of Mr. O. U. Lang, the assistant shipwright at the Royal Dockyard [in Woolwich, London]...A considerable space has been fitted up as booths on both sides and under the bows of the vessel...to afford the friends of the Admiralty and the authorities...a fine view of the launch. The figure-head is a representation, carved by Mr. Hellyer, of Vice-Admiral Sir William Parker...Commander-in-Chief of the fleet at present assembled on the coast of Greece. The vessel presents a very fine appearance, and her weather and main decks have been payed with Jeffery's marine glue. The Nankin is to be christened by Miss Parker, daughter of the gallant admiral whose bust is so appropriately placed at the bows of the vessel'. From "Illustrated London News", 1850

EDITORS COMMENTS
On this momentous day, Saturday, 1850, the H.M. 50-Gun Frigate Nankin is set to be launched at the Royal Dockyard in Woolwich, London. This noble and beautiful specimen of naval architecture is the creation of Mr. O.U. Lang, the assistant shipwright at the yard. The anticipation is palpable as a considerable space has been prepared as booths on both sides and under the bows of the vessel, providing a fine view for the friends of the Admiralty and other distinguished guests. The figurehead of the Nankin is a masterpiece carved by Mr. Hellyer, depicting Vice-Admiral Sir William Parker, Commander-in-Chief of the fleet currently assembled on the coast of Greece. The vessel's grandeur is further accentuated by the payement of her weather and main decks with Jeffery's marine glue. The Nankin is destined to make a grand entrance into the world of the Royal Navy, and the honor of christening this magnificent frigate falls to Miss Parker, the esteemed daughter of the gallant admiral, whose bust is fittingly placed at the bows of the vessel. The launch of the Nankin marks a significant milestone in naval history and is a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of those involved in its creation.
