EDITORS COMMENTS
The heapstead at Kadeby Colliery, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, 1956. This print captures the towering heapstead of Kadeby Colliery in all its industrial glory. The image showcases the top of the winding gear, a testament to the coal mining industry that once thrived in this region. Situated under the watchful shadow of Conisborough Castle, Kadeby Colliery played a significant role in South Yorkshire's history. However, as with many collieries across Britain, it eventually closed its doors in the 1980s due to changing times and economic circumstances. In later years, this historic site became home to an ambitious project known as Earth Centre. Unfortunately, despite receiving substantial funding from lottery cash and high hopes for an ecological park that would educate and inspire visitors about environmental issues, the venture proved ill-fated and poorly planned. It ultimately closed after just one year of operation. This November 1956 photograph by Michael Walters is a poignant reminder of both the rich industrial heritage associated with coal mining in England and the struggles faced by attempts to repurpose these sites for new purposes. The monochrome composition adds depth and character to this snapshot frozen in time.
