EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a portrait of King George III, the notable monarch who reigned over Great Britain and Ireland during the late 18th century. The image captures his regal presence, dressed in elegant attire befitting his royal status. Created by an unknown artist in 1933, this print is a reproduction of a miniature painting originally crafted by Richard Cosway. King George III's reign was marked by significant historical events, including the union of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801. However, towards the end of his life, he faced immense challenges due to mental illness believed to be caused by porphyria, a blood disease. This earned him the moniker "Mad King George" as he became unable to rule effectively and his son took on the role of Regent. The oval-shaped portrait exudes an air of authority and power that characterized George III's reign. It offers viewers a glimpse into history while highlighting both his majesty and vulnerability as he grappled with personal struggles. This particular print is part of "Gestalten Der Weltgeschichte" a book featuring cigarette-card portraits spanning four centuries of world history. Originally published in Germany in 1933, it serves as a testament to how figures like King George III have left indelible marks on global narratives throughout time.
