The Fourth Arm in the Great War: French Air-scouts at work, First World War, 1914-1918, (c1920)

The Fourth Arm in the Great War: French Air-scouts at work, First World War, 1914-1918, (c1920). A powerfully engined French biplane as used for detailed reconnaissance. The pilot is at his control-wheel: one of the two observers is studying the land below through his field-glasses, while the other is throwing earthward, over the French lines, and in a small tube, a written report as to what has been seen. This tube is visible as it falls, bright-coloured ribbons being attached to it, and when it is retrieved by the nearest troops, - who are warned to be on the look-out for such messages from the sky - it is borne swiftly to head-quarters. From " The Great World War - A History" Volume I, edited by Frank A Mumby. [The Gresham Publishing Company Ltd, London, c1920]

The Fourth Arm in the Great War - French Air-scouts at work

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print captures a crucial moment during the First World War, showcasing the remarkable efforts of French air-scouts. The image showcases a powerful biplane, specially designed for detailed reconnaissance missions. As the pilot skillfully maneuvers the aircraft using his control-wheel, two observers are hard at work fulfilling their vital roles. One observer can be seen diligently studying the land below through his field-glasses, carefully documenting every detail he observes. Meanwhile, the other observer is engaged in an extraordinary task - throwing earthward a written report encapsulated within a small tube. Bright-colored ribbons attached to this tube make it visible as it gracefully descends towards the French lines. These messages from above serve as invaluable intelligence for troops on the ground who eagerly await their retrieval. Swiftly retrieved by vigilant soldiers warned to be on constant lookout for such skyborne missives, these tubes are promptly transported to headquarters where they contribute to shaping military strategies and decision-making processes. This historical photograph not only highlights the technological advancements in aviation during that era but also underscores how innovative methods were employed to gather information amidst challenging circumstances. It serves as a testament to human ingenuity and resourcefulness even in times of conflict. Preserved within "The Great World War - A History". Volume I edited by Frank A Mumby, this image immortalizes Georges Bertin Scott's exceptional talent behind the lens and offers us an insightful glimpse into one aspect of warfare during this tumultuous period in history.
