In 1803-06, Captain I. F. Kruzenshtern became the first Russian to circumnavigate the globe. This atlas, published by the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1813, includes maps of Kruzenshtern's route and 109 plates based upon the drawings of V. G. Tilesius, a doctor, naturalist, and the official artist of the expedition. It is one of the largest publications of engravings from tsarist Russia. The subjects depicted include views of Sakhalin, Kamchatka, and the Kurile Islands; representations of Siberian natives and other peoples encountered during the voyage; and local fish and birds from throughout the South and North Pacific

Fig. 1.2, 3.4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11: A Fascinating Collection of Sea Medusae by Pavel Ivanovich Maslovskii (1813) These intricately detailed engravings depict various species of sea medusae, or jellyfish, as observed and meticulously documented during the historic Russian circumnavigation expedition led by Captain I. F. Kruzenshtern between 1803 and 1806. The illustrations were created by V. G. Tilesius, a doctor, naturalist, and the official artist of the expedition, and engraved by Pavel Ivanovich Maslovskii. Fig. 1.2, 3.4, and 5 showcase the Stinging Cubomedusae, a common type of jellyfish with long tentacles. Fig. 3.4 offers a closer look at their elongated tentacles, which are used to capture prey and defend against predators. Fig. 5 highlights other sea medusae with long tentacles, adding to the diverse range of these fascinating creatures. Fig. 6 illustrates a large Brazilian Cubomedusae with a curly fringe, while Fig. 7 displays Warty Sea Medusae. Fig. 8 provides an inside view of the same medusae, revealing their mouth, four tentacles, warts on their hemisphere, and threads. Fig. 9 and 10 provide a closer look at the muscles of their gullet, while Fig. 11 shows the gullet with an open mouth. These engravings serve as a testament to the rich biodiversity encountered during the Kruzenshtern expedition and the dedication of its naturalist and artist to accurately documenting the natural world.
