Don Jose Guell y Rente, of Cuba, 1860. Spanish-Cuban poet, lawyer, novelist, and historian, who...published his first poetical essay, under the title of "Amarguras del Corazon" ("Sorrows of the Heart")...Later in life, Guell y Rente, with ideas more matured and a knowledge of the world more profound, entranced his readers with his "Lagrimas del Corazon" ("Tears of the Heart"), a poem which tells, in the most touching language, the story of his love for the lady who is now his spouse, her Royal Highness the Infanta of Spain, Donna Josefa Bourbon, sister of his Majesty the King [of Spain]. This work has stamped its author as the most exalted of our Castilian poetic celebrities...His prolific pen has gained him also the grateful appreciation of prose-readers by the production of the following works: "Christian Philosophic and Political Thoughts"; "Legends of America"; "The Virgin of Azucenas", a novel; "A Comparison between Isabella I. and Isabella II."; " The Story of a Grief-stricken Soul"; and "The Granddaughter of Kings". He is at present preparing for the press a "History of the Conquest of America". From "Illustrated London News", 1860
