Crystallised Cavern, in the Blue John Mine, 1854. Creator:s Read

Crystallised Cavern, in the Blue John Mine, 1854. Geological tourist attraction in Derbyshire. Fluor spar was called by the miners "Blue John"...The Blue John Mine is chiefly celebrated for the spar of that name with which it abounds...The splendid part of the Cavern of which we give an Illustration is lit up by means of a chandelier, drawn to the top by a pulley, which cannot have been fastened without great difficulty and risk..."The lofty walls" says Mr. Adam, in his popular guide, the "Gem of the Peak", "are clustered with stalactites of the purest white. The top of it looks like a rich cornice, from which are suspended numerous stalactites, assuming the appearance of drapery of exquisite texture, falling in the most graceful folds, and streaming down like fine cords to the bottom". Several other striking effects are produced, by means of blue lights, which create a sort of artificial moonlight...'. From "Illustrated London News", 1854

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Crystallised Cavern, in the Blue John Mine, 1854," showcases the breathtaking beauty of one of Derbyshire's most famous geological attractions. The Blue John Mine is renowned for its abundance of fluor spar, a mineral that the miners referred to as "Blue John." The image captures the awe-inspiring Crystallised Cavern, adorned with stunning formations of stalactites and stalagmites. The lofty walls of the cavern are a sight to behold, clustered with stalactites of the purest white. The top of the cavern resembles a rich cornice, adorned with numerous stalactites that assume the appearance of intricate drapery, cascading down in the most graceful folds. The effect is further enhanced by the use of blue lights, creating an artificial moonlight that adds to the cavern's otherworldly allure. The photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to the mid-19th century when the Blue John Mine was a popular tourist destination. The splendid part of the cavern, as depicted in this image, was lit up by means of a chandelier, drawn to the top by a pulley, a feat that must have required great difficulty and risk. The Illustrated London News described the scene in 1854, noting the cavern's exquisite beauty and the striking effects produced by the use of blue lights. This photograph is a testament to the natural wonders that lie beneath the earth's surface and the human fascination with exploring and documenting them.
