Chukchi Boat Alongside a Clipper Ship, 1889. Creator: Unknown

Chukchi Boat Alongside a Clipper Ship, 1889. From a collection consisting of an album and individual photographs that document the Arctic voyage in 1889 of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii (present-day Anadyr') on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia. The unique binding, date of acquisition, and inventory number of the album suggest that it belonged to the photograph collection of Emperor Nicholas II. The album contains photographs of the local Chukchi people and views of the harbor Petropavlovsk, the village of Nikol'skoe on Bering Island, and Novo-Mariinskii, where construction of the first building is shown. EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, titled "Chukchi Boat Alongside a Clipper Ship, 1889," showcases an intriguing moment in history as two distinct modes of transportation come together. The image, part of an album documenting the Arctic voyage of the clipper ship Razboinik (Pirate) and the construction of the settlement of Novo-Mariinskii on the Bering Sea in northeastern Russia, is believed to have once belonged to Emperor Nicholas II. The Razboinik, a sailing ship with impressive clipper lines, is docked alongside a traditional Chukchi boat. The Chukchi people, an indigenous ethnic group inhabiting the Arctic regions of Siberia, are shown in the foreground, engaging with the crew of the clipper ship. The men, dressed in fur coats and hats, are seen boarding the larger vessel, possibly for trade or transportation. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the meeting of two frontiers: the modern Russian expedition and the traditional Chukchi way of life. The image is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of the Arctic region and the historical significance of Russia's expansion into Siberia during the 19th century. The image, with its crisp details and timeless quality, transports us back to a bygone era, inviting us to reflect on the past and the people who shaped it.
