The Apocalypse: The Fall of Babylon, 1546-1556. Creator: Jean Duvet (French, 1485-1561)

The Apocalypse: The Fall of Babylon, 1546-1556. This print is part of a bound volume of works illustrating the a narrative of the Apocalypse, taken from the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. The 23 engravings in the series occupied the artist for a number of years and represent his greatest artistic achievement. The museums volume is one of only seven known complete sets. Jean Duvet was one of the first major printmakers in France and one of the most original artists of the 1500s. Although he worked mostly in the provincial city of Langres, he became aware of Italian art through the circulation of prints--notably those of Marcantonio Raimondi. His solidly modeled human figures reflect the influence of the Italian High Renaissance. Duvet, however, developed an idiosyncratic, highly artificial style with crowded compositions that ignore rational space in favor of ornamental surface patterns

The Apocalypse - The Fall of Babylon, 1546-1556

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating print created by the talented French artist Jean Duvet. This exquisite artwork is part of a bound volume that illustrates the narrative of the Apocalypse, as described in the Revelation of Saint John in the Bible. Jean Duvet dedicated several years to create this series, which consists of 23 engravings and stands as his greatest artistic achievement. Only seven complete sets are known to exist today, making this particular print an incredibly rare and valuable piece. Duvet's work showcases his originality and mastery as one of France's first major printmakers during the 16th century. While primarily based in Langres, he was exposed to Italian art through circulating prints, particularly those by Marcantonio Raimondi. This influence can be seen in Duvet's skillful portrayal of solidly modeled human figures reminiscent of the Italian High Renaissance. This distinctive approach adds a sense of complexity and intrigue to "The Apocalypse: The Fall of Babylon" drawing viewers into its mesmerizing world. Displayed at The Cleveland Museum of Art, this remarkable print serves as a testament to Jean Duvet's artistic genius and lasting impact on French art history.
