DRINKING, 1925. The Drunkard's Wife - A Glimpse into the Dark Side of Prohibition-era America
EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the year 1925, a time when alcoholism plagued many American households despite the nationwide ban on alcoholic beverages known as Prohibition. Illustrated by John Held Jr. , this thought-provoking piece titled "The Drunkard's Wife" depicts a poignant scene unfolding on a dimly lit street. In this early evening setting, we find ourselves standing outside an old-fashioned pawnshop with its storefront displaying various items for sale. The streetlight casts long shadows on the sidewalk, adding to the somber atmosphere. Against this backdrop stands a woman, Mrs. Drunkard herself, her face etched with weariness and despair. As we gaze at this illustration, it becomes apparent that Mr. Drunkard has fallen victim to his addiction once again. His intoxicated state is evident from his disheveled appearance and unsteady posture as he leans against the pawnshop window for support. John Held Jr. 's artistic talent shines through in capturing not only the physical effects of alcoholism but also its emotional toll on families during this era of social change and upheaval. Through this powerful image captured by Granger Art on Demand, we are reminded of the destructive nature of addiction and how it can tear apart lives even amidst attempts to control it through legislation like Prohibition.
