Antique illustration of palace of Sargon II (Dur-Sharrukin, Khorsabad, Iraq)

Antique illustration of view (drawing) of the front of the palace of the Assyrian king Sargon II (8th century BC), called Dur-Sharrukin ( Fort Sargon or Fortress of Sargon aA), a city-palace. Dur-Sharrukin is now Khorsabad a village in northern Iraq, near Mosul and the buildings have been destroyed by Daesh. The picture features: parts of the palace on the wide walled terrace accessed by monumental stairs, the main entrance (one of the seven gates that pierced the walls), with the great walls and four of the 157 towers that protected the settlement: the inside garden. The walls and the palace were richly decorated with relief-carved stone. Drawing by Viollet-Le-Duc

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the majestic palace of Sargon II, a symbol of power and grandeur during the 8th century BC. The antique illustration showcases the front view of Dur-Sharrukin, also known as Fort Sargon or Fortress of Sargon, located in Khorsabad, Iraq. Despite its unfortunate destruction by Daesh, this image allows us to admire the architectural brilliance that once stood tall. The wide walled terrace with monumental stairs leads us to the main entrance, one of seven gates that pierced through the protective walls. Standing proudly are four out of 157 towers that guarded this magnificent settlement. The intricate details carved into stone adorn both the walls and palace itself. This drawing by Viollet-Le-Duc beautifully captures the essence of classical and Victorian styles prevalent during his time. As we gaze upon it, we can almost imagine how vibrant this place must have been with its ornate facade and formal gardens within. This antique print not only serves as a reminder of our rich history but also highlights the importance of preserving cultural heritage for future generations. It is a testament to human achievements in architecture and artistry from centuries past. Let it inspire us to appreciate and protect these treasures that connect us to our roots.
