EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print captures a scene from the Tales of a Parrot (Tuti-nama), specifically the Seventh night where the Brahman gambler witnesses a dramatic encounter. In this intricate artwork dating back to around 1560, we see the daughter of the king of the jinns trapped in a pit with an old man and a cauldron of boiling oil. The detailed depiction in opaque watercolor, ink, and gold on paper showcases the Mughal School's exquisite craftsmanship during the reign of Akbar in 16th century India. The story behind this illustration is part of a collection of 52 tales originally written in Persian during the 14th century. Commissioned by Emperor Akbar himself, this particular version contains 250 miniature paintings that bring these captivating narratives to life. The rich colors, elaborate calligraphy, and expressive characters all contribute to making this piece a true masterpiece. As we gaze upon this image, we are transported into a world filled with intrigue, danger, and royal lineage. The princess's plight is palpable as she faces peril alongside her companions. This artwork not only serves as visual storytelling but also as a window into the cultural and artistic heritage of India's Moghul Empire.
