EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite craftsmanship of Prince Kung's Dragon and Phoenix Tianhuang Seals, created between 1662 and 1861 by the Chinese School. The seals, measuring 3.3x3.3x8.6 and 3.3x3.3x8.8 cm respectively, are carved from a single boulder with a square section rising to a sloping upper surface. One seal features a dragon in low relief, skillfully utilizing the natural patterns of the stone, gazing down on its young amidst lingzhi motifs. In contrast, the other seal depicts a pair of phoenix soaring amongst peonies above an elegant signature reading "Cangmen". Both seals bear inscriptions that add depth to their historical significance. The dragon seal is adorned with a seven-character stanza followed by the signature "Lin Ji" and dated to correspond with 1719 during the Kangxi Period (1662-1722). Its face is intricately carved in intaglio with an eight-character inscription honoring Prince Gong as "The Peaceful and Eminent Prince Gong" one of Emperor Kangxi's sons. Similarly, the phoenix seal bears a five-character stanza signed by "Ziwei Neishi" alongside its four-character intaglio inscription meaning "Guardian vassal of the state". Flanked by chilong creatures below an imperial two-character inscription denoting bestowed status ("yuci"), this seal exudes regality. The stones themselves possess deep honey tones infused with characteristic radish veining, adding further allure to these remarkable artifacts. Through FungTsang's lens, this print allows us to appreciate not only the visual beauty but also delve into the rich history encapsulated within these magnificent Tianhuang Seals once owned by Prince Kung.
