EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph takes us back to the bustling streets of London in 1828. The image captures Church Lane near St. Martins in the Fields, a narrow passageway that was once filled with life and activity. George Scharf, the talented artist behind this print, beautifully depicts the essence of this Georgian era neighborhood. As we gaze upon the scene, our eyes are drawn to the towering spire and clocktower of St. Martins in the Fields church, proudly standing amidst its surroundings. The quaint alleyway is lined with charming bookshops and shops selling wigs - a testament to the diverse offerings of this vibrant area. However, beneath its picturesque exterior lies a darker reality. Church Lane was infamous for its slum tenements which were so notorious they earned themselves an ominous nickname - "The Bermudas". These dilapidated buildings housed countless individuals struggling to make ends meet. Sadly, progress took its toll on Church Lane as it fell victim to Nash's Strand improvements and was ultimately demolished. This lithograph serves as a poignant reminder of what once was; an intimate glimpse into London's past where reading enthusiasts roamed these very streets while others sought refuge within their humble abodes. Thanks to www. bridgemanimages. com for preserving this historical artwork that allows us to travel back in time and witness a moment frozen forever in ink on paper.
