The Coldstream Guards are the oldest regiment in the Army having been in continuous service since 1650 when they were established at Coldstream on the Scottish border. Despite this the regiment is ranked second in the order of precedence, behind the Grenadier Guards. This is because the Grenadier Guards have served the Crown for a longer period.

The Coldstream Guards Changing Guard at St James, 1905 circa
EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating oil painting by Harry Payne that captures the timeless tradition and grandeur of the British Army. The artwork, displayed in the National Army Museum in London, showcases a significant moment as guardsmen ceremoniously change guard at St James. Painted with meticulous detail and vibrant colors, Payne's masterpiece transports viewers back to early 20th century England. The Coldstream Guards, established in 1650 on the Scottish border, are depicted in their iconic red tunics and bearskin hats. This regiment holds great historical significance as the oldest continuously serving unit in the Army. The painting also highlights an interesting aspect of military hierarchy - despite their long-standing service, the Coldstream Guards rank second to the Grenadier Guards due to their longer association with serving the Crown. Part of a series depicting various units of the British Army, this artwork exemplifies Payne's skillful portrayal of ceremonial events. The composition beautifully captures not only soldiers but also includes a band playing music during this important occasion. As we gaze upon this remarkable piece from Fine Art Finder's collection provided by Bridgeman Images, we are reminded of both our nation's rich history and enduring traditions within its armed forces.
