EDITORS COMMENTS
The print showcases the Army Gold Medal with two clasps: Salamanca and Vittoria, awarded to Major General Sir John Ormsby Vandeleur. This prestigious medal represents his remarkable achievements in the Peninsular War (1808-1814) as he commanded a light infantry brigade. Vandeleur played a crucial role in capturing Ciudad Rodrigo and participating in the battles of Salamanca, Vittoria, and the Nive. However, it was at the Battle of Waterloo (1815) where Vandeleur's leadership truly shone. Commanding a brigade of light cavalry, he came to the rescue of British heavy cavalry after their overzealous pursuit of D Erlons defeated infantry. When the Earl of Uxbridge was wounded, Vandeleur assumed overall command of all cavalry forces within Wellington's army. This print captures not only an exquisite piece of military history but also pays tribute to an exceptional officer who displayed immense courage and strategic brilliance on numerous battlefields. The Army Gold Medal serves as a testament to Vandeleur's unwavering dedication and invaluable contributions to his country. Displayed proudly at the National Army Museum in London, this photograph immortalizes both Sir John Ormsby Vandeleur's legacy and his significant impact on shaping Britain's armed forces during one of its most challenging periods.
