In the background is a heart pierced by an arrow fired by the god of love, Cupid, dressed in medieval robes. A.F.A. Sandys was a friend of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and was a member of the Pre-Raphaelite circle of artists. His work concentrated on female heads in a style influenced by Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones. His pictures were always extremely detailed, and often included flowers. Many of his pictures illustrated subjects from poetry.
