EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the side view of the Arch of Septimius Severus, a magnificent structure that stands as a testament to ancient Roman architecture. Etched with precision and enhanced by a delicate brown wash, this artwork by Agostino Tofanelli transports us back in time to the grandeur of Rome. The arch, dedicated in 203 AD, was built to honor Emperor Septimius Severus and his sons Caracalla and Geta for their triumphs over various adversaries. Standing tall against the backdrop of the Temple of Saturn, it symbolizes their victories over Parthians, Arabs, and Adiabenians of Assyria. Over centuries, this architectural marvel has witnessed destruction and restoration. Fires ravaged it in 283 AD and again in 400 AD but were met with resilience as it was rebuilt each time. In 1803, extensive excavations brought the arch down to its original ground level. Engraved by Pietro Fontana under Pope Pius VII's patronage during his papacy from 1800-1823, this etching beautifully captures every intricate detail. The artist's skillful hand brings out the majesty of this historical landmark while paying homage to its rich history. Preserved within a private collection today but made accessible through Fine Art Finder's collaboration with Bridgeman Images, this print allows us to appreciate both Tofanelli's artistry and Rome's enduring legacy.
