This print showcases a pair of exquisite vases, dating back to approximately 1790. Crafted by the Russian School in the 18th century, these remarkable pieces are made from jasper and ormolu, measuring an impressive 85x56x56 cm each. The attention to detail is truly awe-inspiring. The vases feature circular spreading lids adorned with grape bunches and vine leaf finials, adding a touch of elegance and natural beauty. Their tapering bodies boast an everted lip above bacchic mask handles, evoking a sense of mythical charm. A stylized scrolling border decorated with lotus flowers and anthemion motifs further enhances their ornate appearance. Resting on square simulated porphyry bases, these vases bear inscriptions indicating their unique identity within the collection - No 00194 and No 00195. Although one vase has a missing section of the foliate border and one lid shows two losses to its edge, their overall grandeur remains intact. It is believed that this exceptional duo may have once graced the Palace of Pavlovsk near St. Petersburg before finding its way into private hands. There is speculation that they were presented as a gift in 1801 by Empress Maria Feodorovna of Russia to Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig of Oldenburg (1755-1829), his sister-in-law.
