TOPSHOTS
Melbourne Zoos newest primate baby, a three week-old Colobus monkey, is held in the arms of her mother Clover, in Melbourne on June 29, 2011. Keepers have not been able to determine the sex of the newborn monkey which is pure white and won t display any black markings until its several months old. Black and White Colobus Monkeys, native to Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania and Kenya, have seen their populations suffer from the fur trade during colonial times, but now the greatest threats to their survival are the loss of their habitat and the bushmeat trade, the large-scale hunting to supply meat to towns and cities. EDITORS COMMENTS
In this heartwarming image captured by photographer William West, we are introduced to Melbourne Zoo's newest addition - a three-week-old Colobus monkey. The pure white baby monkey is cradled lovingly in the arms of its mother, Clover. It is still too early for keepers to determine the sex of this adorable primate as it won't display any black markings until several months later. Black and White Colobus Monkeys, native to various African countries including Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Kenya, have faced numerous challenges over the years. Once hunted for their fur during colonial times, they now face greater threats such as habitat loss and the bushmeat trade - large-scale hunting for meat supply in towns and cities. This photo serves as a reminder of both the beauty and vulnerability of these incredible creatures. As we witness this tender moment between mother and child, it prompts us to reflect on our responsibility towards protecting their natural habitats and ensuring their survival. William West's skillful photography allows us to appreciate not only the striking contrast between the white baby monkey against its surroundings but also captures an intimate connection that exists within nature. Through his lens, he brings awareness to important conservation issues while celebrating new life in one of Australia's most beloved zoos.
