EDITORS COMMENTS
Great print capturing a poignant moment in Wolverhampton Wanderers Football Club history: the final appearance of legendary captain Billy Wright in the old gold and black. The scene is set at Molineux Stadium, with referee Jack Taylor officiating the match. Wright, wearing the armband one last time, is seen shaking hands with reserve team captain George Showell. Billy Wright, nicknamed "The Decent One" joined Wolves in 1946 and went on to make a record-breaking 539 appearances for the club between 1946 and 1962. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in English football history, having led Wolves to three League Championships (1949,1954,1958), an FA Cup (1949), and an FA Charity Shield (1949). Wright also earned 100 caps for England, making him the most capped player in the country's history at the time. This emotional farewell took place on May 5,1962, in a 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday. The outpouring of support from fans was immense, with many shedding tears as they realized they were witnessing the end of an era. Wright's impact on Wolves and English football is still felt today, and he was posthumously inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002. This print is a testament to Wright's enduring legacy and the deep connection he forged with Wolves supporters. It serves as a reminder of the passion, dedication, and skill that defined his career and continues to inspire generations of football fans.
