EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Universal Images Group (UIG) showcases the formidable figure of Thomas Percy, the 7th Earl of Northumberland. Born in 1528, he was an influential English nobleman who staunchly adhered to the Roman Catholic faith during a time when Protestantism was gaining ground in Tudor England. In 1569, Thomas Percy took a bold and fateful step by leading the Rising of the North rebellion in support of Mary Queen of Scots. This audacious act aimed to challenge the Protestant monarchy and restore Catholicism's prominence. Unfortunately for him, this valiant effort ended in failure. Following his defeat, Thomas Percy fled to Scotland but was eventually handed over to English authorities. Found guilty of treason against Queen Elizabeth I's regime, he met a tragic end with his beheading—an ultimate sacrifice for his religious convictions. Despite being labeled a traitor by those in power at that time, history has since recognized Thomas Percy's unwavering commitment to his faith. The Roman Catholic Church later beatified him as recognition for his martyrdom. This remarkable photograph captures not only the physical presence of this nobleman but also serves as a poignant reminder of religious strife and political turmoil that characterized Britain during the sixteenth century.
