EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures the devastating aftermath of an air raid during World War II. The image showcases the bomb damage inflicted upon Foxs Wood Tunnel in Bristol, 1941. At first glance, one's eyes are drawn to a rather forlorn-looking carriage positioned at the entrance of No. 2 Tunnel. It is here that the true extent of destruction becomes apparent. A bomb had struck the tunnel mouth with such force that it ricocheted into the unfortunate carriage, obliterating it completely. The initial damage to the tunnel can be observed at the top of its entrance portal, but it is clear that the coach bore the brunt of this explosive impact. Astonishingly, almost an entire side of the coach has fallen away, exposing its vulnerability in these extreme circumstances. This photograph serves as a stark reminder not only of wartime devastation but also highlights how civilian vehicles were no match for such destructive forces unleashed by aerial bombings. It stands as a testament to both human resilience and fragility in times of conflict. Preserved within STEAM Museum's collection, this image offers us a glimpse into history and prompts reflection on those who endured unimaginable hardships during World War II – particularly those affected by bombing raids on home soil like Foxs Wood Tunnel in Bristol.
