Skin of dermestid beetle larva, SEM

Dermestid beetle (Dermestes sp.) empty pupal case, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This beetle is studied by forensic entomologists as it feeds on extremely dry, desiccated dead bodies. In the open it feeds on corpses around 2 months after death. Both beetle and larva feed on the tissues of the corpse, and they can be used to estimate a time of death. The larva lies dormant in a pupa as it develops into the adult form. They also feed on dried foods and hair and dead skin. This specimen was found in the hair of a dried-out dead body. Magnification unknown

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate skin of a dermestid beetle larva, captured using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Dermestid beetles, specifically from the Dermestes species, are of great interest to forensic entomologists due to their unique feeding habits. These beetles have an affinity for desiccated and extremely dry dead bodies, making them valuable indicators in estimating time of death. In their natural habitat, these beetles and their larvae feed on corpses approximately two months after death. Both stages of the insect's life cycle consume the tissues of the decaying body, aiding in decomposition processes. The larva undergoes a transformative stage within its pupal case before emerging as an adult beetle. Aside from their role in forensics, dermestid beetles also sustain themselves by consuming dried foods, hair, and dead skin. This particular specimen was discovered nestled within the hair of a dried-out deceased individual. The magnification level used to capture this image remains unknown; however, it allows us to appreciate the intricate details present on this tiny creature's exoskeleton. With its vibrant colors and distinct patterns visible under SEM technology, this photograph provides viewers with an up-close look at nature's fascinating world.
