Photograph of biologist Thomas Huxley, in 1857

Thomas Huxley. Photograph of English biologist Thomas Henry Huxley (1825-1895), in 1857. He studied medicine and surgery, and joined the Royal Navy where he did important work on plankton. Huxleys name, however, was made as a popularizer of science, notably Darwins theory of evolution. In 1860 Huxley presented Darwins theory at a meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science at Oxford, where he faced his opponent Bishop Samuel Wilberforce. Huxley won the day. His study of primates established man as one of them, and turned evolution into a debate of science rather than emotion. Huxley invented the word agnostic to describe his religious beliefs

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the renowned biologist Thomas Huxley in 1857. Thomas Henry Huxley, an English scientist born in 1825, dedicated his life to the study of medicine and surgery. However, it was his groundbreaking work on plankton during his time with the Royal Navy that truly set him apart. Huxley's name became synonymous with popularizing science, particularly Charles Darwin's revolutionary theory of evolution. In a pivotal moment in 1860, he fearlessly presented Darwin's ideas at a prestigious meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science held at Oxford. It was here that Huxley faced off against Bishop Samuel Wilberforce, who vehemently opposed evolutionary concepts. In this historic encounter, Huxley emerged victorious and forever changed the course of scientific discourse. His extensive research on primates firmly established humans as part of this diverse group and transformed evolution from an emotional debate to one rooted in scientific inquiry. Not only did Huxley contribute significantly to evolutionary biology but he also left an indelible mark on religious philosophy by coining the term "agnostic" to describe his own beliefs. This remarkable photograph not only immortalizes one man's immense contributions to science but also serves as a reminder that knowledge and reason have the power to shape our understanding of ourselves and our place within nature.
