Henry Walter Bates, British naturalist C016 / 5866

Henry Walter Bates (1825-1892), British naturalist. Whilst on an expedition to South America with Alfred Wallace, Bates noted startling similarities between butterfly species. He attributed this to natural selection, since palatable butterflies that closely resembled noxious species would be left alone by predators and thus tend to flourish. This phenomenon became known as Batesian mimicry

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed British naturalist, Henry Walter Bates. Known for his groundbreaking work in the field of biology, Bates made a remarkable discovery while on an expedition to South America with Alfred Wallace. As he observed various butterfly species, he noticed something extraordinary – striking similarities between them. Intrigued by this phenomenon, Bates delved deeper into his observations and proposed a theory that would revolutionize our understanding of nature's intricate mechanisms. He hypothesized that these resemblances were not mere coincidences but rather a result of natural selection at play. Batesian mimicry, as it came to be known, explained how palatable butterflies evolved to closely resemble noxious species in order to avoid predation. By mimicking their toxic counterparts' appearance, these harmless butterflies gained protection from predators who associated similar patterns with danger. This monochrome portrait captures the essence of Henry Walter Bates - a man dedicated to unraveling nature's secrets through meticulous observation and scientific inquiry. His contributions as an entomologist and zoologist have left an indelible mark on the field of biology. Displayed proudly by the Natural History Museum in London, this print serves as a reminder of Bates' pioneering work and continues to inspire future generations in their quest for knowledge about our fascinating world.
