False-col TEM of AIDS virus inside T-cell

False-colour transmission electron micrograph of AIDS virus particles inside a stricken T4 lymphoc- yte, a white blood cell of the immune system. AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) destroys T4 lymphocytes, rendering the victim liable to fatal secondary infections. The virus, designated HIV for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, is a retrovirus: its genetic program is held in RNA (red cores of virus spheres), translated into DNA inside the T4 cell, & infiltrates the cells own DNA. Once activated, the viral DNA replicates & progeny bud from the cell wall, killing the host cell. Magnif- ication: x30, 000 at 35mm, x60, 000 at 6x7cm sizes

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a false-colour transmission electron micrograph of the AIDS virus particles residing within a distressed T4 lymphocyte, one of the crucial white blood cells responsible for our immune system. The devastating Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) ravages these T4 lymphocytes, leaving the afflicted individual susceptible to life-threatening secondary infections. The virus itself is known as HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus and belongs to the retrovirus family. Its genetic blueprint is encoded in RNA, which can be observed as vibrant red cores within the viral spheres. Once inside the T4 cell, this RNA program undergoes translation into DNA and infiltrates the host cell's own genetic material. Upon activation, viral DNA replication commences and offspring viruses bud from the cell wall, ultimately leading to its demise. Magnified at an astonishing x30,000 at 35mm size or x60,000 at 6x7cm size, this image offers a profound glimpse into the intricate world of virology and disease progression. It serves as a stark reminder of both the complexity and destructive power that lies within microscopic organisms such as HIV. Captured by Science Photo Library – renowned for their exceptional scientific imagery – this print not only educates but also evokes contemplation about our ongoing battle against infectious diseases like AIDS while emphasizing the importance of continued research towards finding effective treatments and prevention strategies.
