Birdwing Butterfly Ornithoptera paradisea

A male Paradise Birdwing, Ornithoptera paradisea, from Papua New Guinea. This species is CITES protected and this specimen was licenced for export and sale from authorised Butterfly ranching in PNG. The ranching project is designed to encourage small farmers to protect and plant the butterflies foodplants and discourage overcollecting of adults from the wild. Perfect specimens are generally only possible when the adult is hatched from a wild collected chrysalis or captive reared larvae. It is believed that such collection misses enough individuals to maintain a viable local population and encourages farmers to keep suitable butterfly habitat nearby

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stunning beauty of a male Paradise Birdwing butterfly, scientifically known as Ornithoptera paradisea. Originating from Papua New Guinea, this species is not only visually striking but also holds great ecological importance. Classified under CITES protection, this particular specimen was licensed for export and sale from authorized Butterfly ranching in PNG. The ranching project behind this endeavor aims to promote conservation efforts by encouraging small farmers to protect and cultivate the butterflies' food plants while discouraging excessive collection of adults from the wild. The ultimate goal is to maintain a viable local population by ensuring that enough individuals are left undisturbed in their natural habitat. Perfect specimens like the one captured in this photo are typically obtained when an adult hatches from a chrysalis collected in the wild or reared in captivity. This practice strikes a delicate balance between scientific study and environmental preservation. By highlighting both the natural beauty of these birdwing butterflies and the crucial conservation efforts being undertaken, photographer Paul D. Stewart sheds light on an intricate web of interconnectedness between humans and nature. Through responsible practices such as butterfly ranching, we can appreciate these magnificent creatures while actively contributing to their long-term survival.
