Bee head, SEM C018 / 0546
Bee head, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This is the head of a small bumblebee. Flying insects often have two sets of eyes, coloured pink here. The two large compound eyes (left and right) are combined with three dorsal ocelli or simple eyes on top of the head. The ocelli are thought to aid stability during flight as well as monitoring light levels. The antennae (sensory structures) are the stalk-like structures between the compound eyes. Magnification: x12 when printed at 10 centimetres across

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a bee's head, captured through a coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The small bumblebee's head reveals fascinating details about its vision and sensory capabilities. The pink-coloured eyes depicted here are actually two sets of eyes commonly found in flying insects. Alongside the large compound eyes on both sides, three dorsal ocelli or simple eyes crown the top of the bee's head. These ocelli not only aid in maintaining stability during flight but also play a crucial role in monitoring light levels. The antennae, portrayed as stalk-like structures between the compound eyes, serve as sensory organs for this remarkable creature. With a magnification of x12 when printed at 10 centimetres across, this image allows us to appreciate the intricate biological features that enable bees to navigate their surroundings with precision. Through this photograph by Louise Hughes from Science Photo Library, we gain insight into the world of these industrious creatures and marvel at their extraordinary anatomical adaptations. This image is an ode to nature's complexity and serves as a reminder of how much there is still left to discover within our own environment.
