EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to Pentewan harbour in Cornwall, circa 1914. From the vantage point on the west side of the harbour, we are given a glimpse into the bustling activity of this historic port. The focal point of the image is undoubtedly the timber narrow gauge railway gantry, which dominates the foreground. This railway system was crucial for transporting china clay from St Austell to Pentewan harbour for shipment. The trucks filled with this valuable cargo can be seen patiently waiting to be loaded onto sailing vessels via wooden chutes that are raised above one of these ships on the left-hand side of the picture. Speaking of ships, our attention is drawn towards a magnificent barquentine named Imogene (originally known as Strathendrick). Its majestic presence adds an air of grandeur to this already picturesque scene. Captured by photographer Herbert Hughes, this print not only showcases a significant moment in history but also highlights Cornwall's rich maritime heritage. It allows us to appreciate how vital industries like china clay mining played a role in shaping local communities and economies during that era. As we gaze upon this snapshot frozen in time, it serves as a reminder of how much has changed over a century while simultaneously celebrating and preserving Cornwall's past for future generations.
