EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "The Road of the Roman" takes us back in time to the era of the mighty Roman Empire. Produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) between 1923 and 1947, this poster showcases a remarkable artwork by W P Wollen. The image depicts a group of Roman cavalrymen on horseback, gallantly riding along Hadrian's Wall, also known as The Roman Wall. Dating back to the 2nd century AD, Hadrian's Wall stands as an awe-inspiring testament to Roman engineering and military might. Originally spanning an impressive distance of 73 miles from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend in Northumberland, it has become one of the most iconic frontiers associated with the ancient empire. The artist skillfully captures both the grandeur of these mounted soldiers and the imposing presence of Hadrian's Wall behind them. This monumental fortification served as a defense against potential invaders from northern Britain during its construction. Printed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son Ltd in London WC2, this large-scale print measures at an impressive 1016mm x 630mm. It is part of National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection and offers viewers a glimpse into history while celebrating both artistic excellence and historical monuments like Hadrian's Wall.
