Coracles 1945: Following a pattern evolved over two thousand years ago

Coracles 1945: Following a pattern evolved over two thousand years ago, coracle builders construct the oval, basket-shaped boats that were being used by ancient Britons when Caesar invaded the island. Willow and hazel rods are bent into shape and covered with tarred calico, making a small, light craft in which a single paddler sits. They are used mainly by salmon fishers along remote Welsh rivers, and coracle men have been responsible for adding measurably to Britains fish supply during the war. When conditions are favourable the men often work for 19 hours a day. Circa 1945

Coracles 1945 - Preserving an Ancient Tradition in the Midst of War

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print takes us back to the year 1945, capturing a timeless scene that has been repeated for over two thousand years. In this image, coracle builders are meticulously constructing oval-shaped boats using techniques passed down through generations. These unique vessels were first used by ancient Britons during Caesar's invasion of the island. The process begins with skilled craftsmen bending willow and hazel rods into shape, forming a sturdy framework. To ensure durability and buoyancy, they carefully cover the structure with tarred calico. The result is a small and lightweight craft designed for a single paddler. During World War II, these coracles played an unexpected role in Britain's fish supply. Mainly utilized by salmon fishers along remote Welsh rivers, dedicated coracle men worked tirelessly to add measurably to the nation's food resources during challenging times. When conditions allowed it, these brave individuals would often spend up to 19 hours a day on their arduous fishing expeditions. In this peaceful rural scene captured in Wales, we witness four men engaged in rowing their coracles along a serene river. Their mixed age range reflects how this ancient tradition has been preserved and cherished across generations. This evocative photograph serves as both a testament to human resilience amidst adversity and an homage to the enduring beauty of traditional craftsmanship that continues to thrive even amid modernity's rapid progressions.
