EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Aneurin Bevan, a prominent figure in British history. Captured in August 1945, the image depicts a serious-looking Bevan, exuding determination and strength. Born in Tredegar, Monmouthshire in 1897, Bevan's humble beginnings shaped his unwavering commitment to social justice. Starting work at just 13 years old in the Tytryst colliery, Bevan quickly rose through the ranks and became chairman of his Lodge by the age of 19. His thirst for knowledge led him to attend the Central Labour College in London after winning a scholarship in 1919. A dedicated member of the Labour Party, Bevan was elected as MP for Ebbw Vale in 1929. Throughout his career, he actively campaigned against fascism and even traveled to Spain during the Spanish Civil War. However, this stance temporarily resulted in his expulsion from the Labour Party. In 1946, Bevan assumed office as Minister for Health and played an instrumental role in establishing what is now known as the National Health Service (NHS). This groundbreaking achievement revolutionized healthcare accessibility for all British citizens. By 1959, Aneurin Bevan had become deputy leader of the Labour Party—a testament to his enduring influence within politics. This remarkable photograph captures him at a pivotal moment towards the end of World War II when he was already making waves with his progressive ideas and unwavering dedication to improving society.
