This evocative sketch, published by the Illustrated London News (ILN) on July 18, 1879, captures the decisive moment of the Zulu War's final defeat at the burning of Ulundi on July 4, 1879. The British Army, massed in the foreground, stands victorious over the once formidable Zulu forces. The infantry, dressed in their red coats and bearskins, are a stark contrast to the smoldering ruins of Ulundi in the background. Several gun carriages, now reduced to burnt-out husks, bear testament to the intense battle that had taken place. The Zulu capital, a place of great cultural and historical significance, had been reduced to ashes.
