EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the bustling activity at The Army Aerial Works in Farnborough, Hampshire, England, during the early years of the 20th century. Dated 1911, this image offers a rare glimpse into the military's pioneering efforts in aviation technology during the build-up to the First World War. The Army Aerial Works was established in 1908, with the primary objective of developing military aircraft for the British Army. The site, located in Farnborough, was chosen for its open spaces and favorable weather conditions. In this photograph, we see a hive of activity, with men working on various aircraft components, while others test engines and propellers. The scene is dominated by the large wooden hangar in the background, where several aircraft are housed. These early military aircraft, with their biplane wings and open cockpits, are a far cry from the sophisticated warplanes that would soon take to the skies during the First World War. The Army Aerial Works played a pivotal role in the development of military aviation in Britain. By the outbreak of war in 1914, the site had produced over 1,000 aircraft, including the Royal Flying Corps' first fighter squadron, No. 1 Squadron, which was equipped with the BE2c biplane. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the men and women who worked tirelessly to advance aviation technology for military use. It serves as a reminder of the crucial role that innovation and engineering played in shaping the course of history during the First World War.
