EDITORS COMMENTS
Vlad Drakul, also known as Vlad III or Vlad Tepes, was a historical prince of Walachia, a region in Romania, from 1456 to 1462 and from 1476 to 1477. This haunting image of Vlad Drakul, or Vlad the Devil, is a partial basis for the legendary figure of Dracula. Vlad's reign was marked by extreme brutality and violence, earning him a fearsome reputation that has endured through centuries. Born in 1431, Vlad was the eldest son of Vlad II Dracul, who was the ruler of Walachia from 1436 to 1442 and the first known member of the Draculesti dynasty to adopt the epithet "Dracul," which means "dragon" in Romanian. Vlad's early life was marked by political instability and conflict, as he was exiled from Walachia multiple times and spent time in the Ottoman and Hungarian courts. In 1456, Vlad regained the throne of Walachia and ruled with an iron fist. He is said to have impaled his enemies on stakes, earning him the nickname "Vlad the Impaler." Vlad's brutal tactics were aimed at maintaining order and preventing the Ottoman Turks from invading Walachia. He also implemented reforms to improve the economy and strengthen the military. Despite his brutal reputation, Vlad is also remembered for his religious tolerance and patronage of the arts. He is said to have built the Monastery of Snagov, which is located on an island in Lake Snagov and is the supposed burial place of Vlad and his family. Vlad was deposed in 1477 and spent the rest of his life in exile. He died in 1476 or 1477, and his exact burial place is unknown. The legend of Dracula, as popularized by Bram Stoker's novel "Dracula," is based on Vlad Drakul, but the historical figure and the fictional character are vastly different. This image of Vlad Drakul, with his piercing gaze and ominous presence, serves as a reminder of the complex and fascinating history of this enigmatic prince.
