EDITORS COMMENTS
Trajan's Column: A Testament to Ancient Roman Civilization and the Dacian Wars Trajan's Column, located in the heart of Rome's Forum, stands as a magnificent testament to the ancient Roman civilization and the military victories of Emperor Trajan during the Dacian Wars (1101-106 A.D.). This intricately sculpted marble column, which stands at a height of approximately 30 meters, was erected to commemorate Trajan's military triumphs over the Dacians, a people inhabiting the region of present-day Romania. The spiraling relief on the column, carved from Carrara marble, depicts the military campaigns in great detail, with over 2,500 figures and 150 scenes. The artwork was created under the supervision of the Greek sculptor Apollodorus of Damascus. The scenes on the column begin with Trajan's departure from Rome, followed by the various stages of the military campaign, including the siege of Sarmizegetusa Regia, the capital of Dacia, and the eventual surrender of the Dacian king Decebalus. The column is not only an important historical and artistic artifact, but also a significant example of ancient Roman urbanism. It was originally located in the Forum of Trajan, which was designed to accommodate the column and provide a grand setting for the emperor's triumphal procession. The column's intricate carvings and impressive height have made it a popular tourist attraction and a source of inspiration for scholars and artists throughout history. Despite the passage of time, the column remains an impressive reminder of the Roman Empire's military might and artistic achievements. The scaffolding surrounding the column is a reminder of ongoing efforts to preserve this ancient monument for future generations to appreciate and learn from.
