Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey with advisors / patriots

Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of Turkey (1844 - 1918) pictured with Niazi Bey, Enver Pasha, Chevket Pasha, Prince Sehzade Yusuf Izzeddin Effendi, Riza Bey, Turkish Patriot Midhat Pacha and the 1st Class Cruiser, the Hamidie. Sultan of the Ottoman Empire from 1909 until his death in 1918, Mehmed - original name Mehmed Resad - spent much of his life in seclusion until the forced abdication of his brother Sultan Abdul Hamid II at the hands of the Young Turks in 1909. A kindly gentle man with an interest in Persian literature, Mehmed was effectively little more than a puppet Sultan whose actions were directed by leaders of the Committee of Union and Progress. Mehmed was little able to govern of his own accord and thus accepted direction from Young Turk leaders including Enver Pasha

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, Sultan Mehmed V Reshad of the Ottoman Empire (1844-1918) is seen in the company of some of the most influential figures of the Young Turk Revolution. The Sultan, originally named Mehmed Resad, spent much of his life in seclusion until the forced abdication of his brother Sultan Abdul Hamid II in 1909. Mehmed, a kindly and gentle man with an interest in Persian literature, was effectively a puppet Sultan whose actions were directed by the leaders of the Committee of Union and Progress. Surrounding the Sultan in this image are some of the key figures of the Young Turk Revolution. To his right, we see Niazi Bey, a prominent military leader, and Enver Pasha, who would later serve as the Minister of War and the Prime Minister of the Ottoman Empire. To the Sultan's left is Chevket Pasha, who served as the Grand Vizier, or prime minister, from 1912 to 1913. Prince Sehzade Yusuf Izzeddin Effendi, the heir apparent, is also present, as well as Turkish patriot Midhat Pasha and Riza Bey, a prominent journalist and politician. Behind the Sultan is the 1st Class Cruiser, the Hamidie. The Hamidie was a symbol of the Ottoman Empire's modernizing military and a reminder of the growing power of the Young Turks. The Sultan's attire is adorned with various medals and orders, reflecting his status as the ruler of the Ottoman Empire. This photograph captures a pivotal moment in Ottoman history, as the Young Turks worked to modernize the empire and bring it into the modern world. Despite Mehmed's limited role in governing, this image serves as a reminder of his symbolic importance as the Sultan during this period of transformation.
