EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a unique moment during World War I, as a group of esteemed Society ladies, affectionately referred to as the 'Some Kindly Souls' by The Tatler, came together to support a noble cause. The ladies, who were the children or relations of the Edwardian intellectuals known as the Souls, are seen selling programmes at a concert held at Grosvenor House in aid of the Star and Garter Fund. The fund aimed to establish a hospital in Richmond for totally disabled soldiers and sailors at the former Star and Garter Hotel, which was demolished in 1919. From left to right, the ladies pictured include Lady Mainwaring, Miss Nancy Cunard, Miss Bettine Stuart-Wortley, and Lady Diana Manners, with Miss Warrender, Miss Violet Warrender, and Lady Forbes-Robertson standing at the back. The concert featured an impressive line-up of performers, including Lady Churston (Denise Orme), Mlle. Dorziat, Miss Mabel Russell, Miss Madge Titheridge, Miss Lottie Venne, Lady Maud Warrender, and Mr Nelson Keys. This poignant image showcases the resilience and generosity of the upper classes during a time of great hardship and adversity. The ladies' involvement in fundraising efforts for the Star and Garter Fund demonstrates their commitment to supporting those in need and providing them with the care and resources they required. The concert not only served as a source of entertainment but also as a powerful reminder of the collective efforts towards the war effort and the importance of community support during challenging times.
