The Smith Brothers' achievement, which took place on November 15, 1919, marked a significant milestone in aviation history and solidified their place as Australian heroes. Born in Adelaide, South Australia, in 1892, Ross Macpherson Smith was a daring and determined aviator who had already made a name for himself by setting numerous records for long-distance flights in Australia before embarking on the ambitious trans-Pacific journey. The Vickers Vimy biplane, a sturdy and versatile aircraft, was chosen for the expedition due to its reliability and endurance. The brothers faced numerous challenges during their epic journey, including harsh weather conditions, mechanical issues, and the need for repairs in various locations along the way. Despite these obstacles, they persevered, and on March 10, 1919, they landed in Darwin, Australia, completing the first leg of their journey. They continued on to their final destination, Adelaide, on March 28, 1919, after a total flying time of 49 days, 11 hours, and 14 minutes.
