EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcolored copperplate engraving, taken from Robert von Spalart's Historical Picture of the Costumes of the Principal People of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages (1796), depicts a Roman cavalry unit on the march. The Roman soldiers are shown riding on horseback, armed with javelins, ready to engage in battle. One soldier in the foreground is dismounted and is carrying his pack, sword, and shield. The Roman cavalryman on horseback wears a helmet with a crest, a breastplate, and greaves. He is holding the reins in one hand and a javelin in the other. The javelin, known as a verutum, was a common weapon used by Roman cavalry. It consisted of a long shaft with a sharp iron head, which could be thrown with great force and accuracy. The dismounted Roman soldier is carrying a gladius, a short sword, and a scutum, a large rectangular shield. The scutum was the standard infantry shield used by the Roman legions. The soldier also has a pack on his back, which would have contained his supplies and equipment. This image provides a glimpse into the military organization and equipment of the Roman army during the classical period. The use of cavalry, armed with javelins, was an important tactical innovation that gave the Romans a significant advantage on the battlefield. The image also highlights the importance of infantry, who provided the backbone of the Roman military and protected the cavalry from enemy attacks.
