EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the iconic Roberts Field Uniform, worn by the renowned British military commander, Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, 1st Earl Roberts (1832-1914). Roberts, who is often referred to as "Bobs" or "Bobbie" by the British public, served in the British Army for over 60 years and is best known for his victories in the Second Anglo-Afghan War and the Second Boer War. The uniform in this image dates back to Roberts' time as a young officer in the British Army, around the mid-19th century. The field uniform, which was the standard uniform for British soldiers during this period, consisted of a red tunic with gold lace and brass buttons, a white waistcoat, and dark trousers. The uniform was designed to provide both protection and mobility on the battlefield. Roberts' military career began in 1852 when he joined the 1st Bengal Cavalry in India. He quickly rose through the ranks, earning a reputation as a brave and capable commander. In 1878, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief in India, a position he held until 1880. During his time in India, he led successful campaigns against the Afghans and the Mahdist forces in Sudan. In 1899, Roberts was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in South Africa during the Second Boer War. He led the British to several important victories, including the Battle of Paardeberg and the Battle of Diamond Hill. Roberts' leadership and military prowess earned him the nickname "The Greatest Soldier of the Queen." This photograph is a testament to the rich history of the British military and the legacy of one of its greatest commanders. The Roberts Field Uniform, with its traditional red and gold colors, stands as a symbol of bravery, honor, and military tradition.
