EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking color photograph, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II bids farewell to the 5th Infantry Brigade as they embark on their journey to the South Atlantic to support the United Kingdom's efforts in the Falklands War. The image, taken on 12 May 1982, captures a poignant moment as the Queen, dressed in a bright pink coat and hat, waves from the balcony of the HMS Brunswick as the soldiers below salute in return. The ship, adorned with the Union Jack flag, is surrounded by other vessels of the Royal Navy, all ready to set sail and join the fleet heading towards the conflict. The backdrop of the bustling Southampton docks adds to the sense of urgency and importance of the scene.
